Alyson Shontell is the Editor-in-Chief and Chief Content Officer of Fortune, where she leads the editorial vision for the iconic, nearly century-old business brand. Appointed in October 2021, she is the first female editor-in-chief in Fortune’s history. Under her leadership, the publication has aggressively expanded its digital footprint, premium journalism, and global event franchises.
Alyson is also the creator and host of Fortune’s premier podcast, Fortune 500: Titans and Disruptors of Industry, where she sits down with the most influential minds shaping the business world. She regularly conducts some of the most sought-after interviews in media, including exclusive, news-making conversations with world-class leaders, athletes, and politicians—ranging from an in-depth Oval Office economic strategy sit-down with Donald Trump, to leadership dialogues with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and NFL legend Tom Brady.
Prior to joining Fortune, Alyson was a pioneering force at Business Insider, which she joined in 2008 as its sixth employee. She rose from a tech reporter to become Editor-in-Chief in 2016. At the time of her appointment, she made history as the youngest editor to run a global business publication.
An active voice in the industry, Alyson is a judge for the prestigious Gerald Loeb Awards in business journalism. She has been named one of Min’s Rising Stars in Media and was recognized in Folio’s Top Women in Media. She is a graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications, where she currently serves on the dean's advisory board.
