Alphabet boasted the top-performing Big Tech stock of 2021 as its shares soared by more than 65%, nearly three times the Nasdaq’s 22% gain. It also set aside a whopping $50 billion to buy back shares and announced a 20-for-1 stock split to encourage more investment. Alphabet’s stellar performance was boosted in part by its Google Cloud services, which registered a revenue increase of almost 50%. But while financials were booming, Alphabet faced many challenges on the HR front. Hundreds of workers opted to unionize, after which the company offered enhanced employee benefits including extended parental leave and vacation time; the company’s hybrid-work plans also irked employees who had grown accustomed to working remotely. On the geopolitical front, Alphabet barred Russian media outlets from receiving ad revenue via its online platforms after Russia invaded Ukraine, and transformed its Google offices in Poland into a safe haven for Ukrainian refugees.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, faced major challenges in 2020. It was attacked for pushing out two A.I. researchers and got hammered during congressional hearings, and it suffered its first-ever slowdown in advertising revenue. Despite all that, it ended the year with record fourth-quarter sales, after its ad business rebounded from a coronavirus-related lull. Alphabet also benefited from YouTube’s rapid growth, and it invested big money in its cloud business. The company wrapped up 2020 with $182.5 billion in revenue, up 13% year over year, and more than $40 billion in profit. But 2021 hasn’t been easy either. Alphabet still faces federal and state antitrust lawsuits, pressure from a newly formed employee union, and scrutiny over problematic content disseminated on YouTube.

When a company’s name becomes a verb, it’s hard to argue it hasn’t had a big impact. Google, the flagship of the Alphabet holding company, has changed how we find information, navigate the world, and communicate. Underlying most of its products and services is artificial intelligence—it makes Google’s searches better (and thus more valuable to advertisers), Google Translate more accurate, and Google Assistant smarter. The company has made many of the breakthrough A.I. techniques behind these products freely available for others to use. 
 
But Google is also deploying A.I. to directly save lives. Its Flood Forecasting Initiative uses A.I. to generate hyper-local forecasts of rising water levels (as shown here), giving more than 200 million people at risk from potentially lethal floods across India up to 48 hours’ advance warning of dangerous water levels. Since launching in cooperation with India’s government in 2017, the project has issued 27 million alerts. Research Google is conducting with Yale indicates that 65% of those who get an alert take action to protect themselves. Google has extended the system to Bangladesh, where flooding kills some 5,000 people a year. And it hopes to extend it worldwide: Globally, flooding affects up to 250 million people and causes $33 billion in damage annually.

100 Best Large Workplaces for Millennials

Google tops the list once again, marking its eighth appearance and fifth time as No. 1.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.
