Nutrafol is a popular, physician-formulated hair growth supplement for women ages 18 to 44 years old (though they make a men’s version, too) who may be experiencing thinning hair. Nutrafol Hair Growth Nutraceutical is designed to help address some causes of thinning hair, including stress, lifestyle, and nutrition. Unlike some other hair loss treatments, this product is available over the counter, making it an easy addition to your routine.

Our tester, Pete, was impressed with this product, giving it an overall 4 out of 5 rating. At the start of the purchasing process, he first wanted to see if there was any sort of website feature that would assess his needs and make a product recommendation. There wasn’t, so Pete chose the “Hair Growth Nutraceutical,” opting not to bundle that with additional products because he wanted to see if that worked on its own before adding additional products into the mix. 

Our tester liked Nutrafol’s emphasis on a holistic approach to hair loss, saying Nutrol explains that pills alone may not have a huge impact, but if used in conjunction with healthy lifestyle changes, success is more likely.

“I do think this product is a good fit for my current lifestyle and needs,” Pete said, explaining he wanted something that was easy to purchase and didn’t require a prescription. 

As for the product’s formulation, Nutrafol packs a lot in. As Pete said, “In addition to the vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, biotin, iodine, zinc, and selenium, the product contains two proprietary blends named the Synergen Complex and the Nutrafol Blend. These contain a series of herbal extracts and amino acids that are included to support hair growth.”

Overall, Pete thought the Nutrafol website did a good job explaining the potential product benefits without making outlandish claims and he thought the purchase process was straightforward. He also liked the “robust FAQ section” which answered many of his questions prior to purchase. As for drawbacks, Pete explained, “It’s not a cheap product, priced at $88 per bottle.” Unfortunately, we had to give Nutrafol a 3 out of 5 on cost, though it does minimize the need to buy multiple supplements. 

Pete also noted that people who choose a subscription option, which means the product would be delivered on a monthly basis without the need to keep reordering, receive complimentary subscriber benefits that includes access to a naturopathic doctor for consults, a hair-mineral analysis lab test, and more.

Vitamin D is considered an important nutrient for hair health because hair follicles actually have vitamin D receptors—and this nutrient helps promote the growth phase of the hair cycle. Low levels of vitamin D have also been linked with certain types of hair loss, including alopecia areata (an autoimmune disorder that causes non-scarring hair loss) and telogen effluvium, which is a temporary type of hair loss that can happen after a stressful event. While vitamin D deficiency is seldom the sole cause of hair thinning or loss, choosing to supplement with vitamin D could offer some benefit.

Our tester, Pete, has a background in dietetics so primarily analyzed this product’s vitamin content. He reported that he didn’t use the product long enough to notice any clear benefits, noting that a person would likely need to get bloodwork done to check for increases in vitamins D and K.

To start with, Pete noted the container for this product was easily to open and shut, and that it was small and convenient for travel. As for the actual process of taking the supplement, Pete said, “I didn’t experience any digestive issues or negative side effects,” rating it a 5 out of 5 for side effects, and a 3 out of 5 for how easy it was to swallow the pills. He also gave it a 5 out of 5 for how easy it was to read and follow the instructions.

His take as a nutritionist was that, “Legion Vitamin D+K is a vitamin support supplement that pairs Vitamin D3 with K1 and K2. These vitamins work in tandem to support overall health. Ritual says this vitamin is designed to address nutritional gaps in a person’s diet, noting that in a 12-week clinical trial the vitamin was shown to increase vitamin D levels by 43% as well as increased omega-3 DHA by 41%. Rather than focusing specifically on hair health, Ritual designed its multivitamin to address a wide range of areas including brain health, bone health, blood building—using chelated iron and methylated folate to promote red blood cell formation—and antioxidant support.

Our product tester, Kate, tried Ritual’s multivitamin designed for women 18 and older, and she took it for several months. She first noticed the packaging and said, “I love Ritual’s packaging, but I will say that the white text on the clear bottle can be hard to read, especially when the bottle is full since it kind of blends in with the pills themselves.” Upon first impression, she rated the product a 3 out of 5. 

According to our tester, the product is a double encapsulated pill that’s enterically coated, and “the second capsule almost looks like small white beads inside the initial gelatin capsule.” Kate noticed a definite flavor, too. “It tastes minty. There is also an overwhelming mint smell when you open the bottle, and there is a mint aftertaste when you take it as well,” she explained. She noted that while she enjoyed it, those who don’t like mint could find it overwhelming. She also awarded it a 5 out of 5 for how easy it was to swallow. 

Overall, Kate had rave reviews. As she explained, “I love taking this product. I use it daily, and I have noticed some real improvements. I noticed that my nails are growing faster and stronger, and I can tell my skin looks healthy.” She also noted that she has more energy throughout the day, and this was all without experiencing any digestive issues or other noticeable discomforts. 

As for drawbacks, Kate did note that the price point may deter some people from buying, but in her experience the product is worth the cost. She rated it a 3 out of 5 on price.

One 2020 study showed that in a study of women with hair loss, approximately 65% had iron deficiency. So, we’ve included an iron supplement in our roundup, given the findings that iron is a key nutrient for hair health.

Our tester, Pete, looked at Nutricost’s Iron for Women and first noted that the bottle was travel-friendly—small enough to fit in a backpack or small purse—and that the label was easy to read. His first impression of the product was positive, giving it a 5 out of 5.

This supplement itself comes in a clear capsule, with a light brown powder inside. Pete said the capsule was a standard size, and that it didn’t have any specific flavor. He rated it a 3 out of 5 for how easy it was to swallow. 

Pete’s overall impression was positive, as he said, “this would be a top budget-friendly iron supplement.” He rated it a 5 out of 5 for price. The supplement also contains a variety of nutrients—vitamin C, folate, vitamin B12, and iron—though Pete noted that the amount of iron, 65 milligrams,  would be considered a high dose. “For perspective, the recommended daily intake for adult women ages 19 to 50 years old is about 18 milligrams per day, and for adult men it’s 8 milligrams per day,” Pete said. “A 65-milligram dose is therefore well above baseline daily needs and is typically more in line with amounts used to help correct an existing iron deficiency rather than simply maintain normal levels.”

With that in mind, while this is a great budget option, be sure to check with your doctor before taking a new supplement. Not every woman needs an iron supplement, and this particular option may be best suited for those with existing iron deficiencies. We also like that it’s third-party tested.

Our Thoughts on Perelel Iron Supplement

Iron is a key nutrient for health hair, as noted above, and given that iron deficiency may be linked with hair loss we’ve included another supplement with this vital nutrient in our roundup: Perelel’s Daily Iron Ease.

Pete, our tester, examined the product’s packaging and found the container size suitable for traveling. He rated it a 5 out of 5 based on first impressions.

The supplement is a clear capsule with light brown powder inside, and it’s of average size. Pete reports that the capsule didn’t have a specific taste, nor did he experience any digestive issues after taking it. He rated it a 5 out of 5 for side effects (indicating no side effects), and a 3 out of 5 for flavor.

Pete noted that this particular supplement is “highlighted to be pregnancy and breastfeeding safe,” and mentioned that the supplement contains 15 milligrams of iron as ferrous bisglycinate chelate (ferrochel), 30 milligrams of vitamin C, 5 micrograms of vitamin B12, and 25 milligrams of magnesium. Pete, who has a background in dietetics, explained, “Ferrochel is a patented form of iron that’s chelated (bound) to glycine. It’s designed to treat iron deficiency without causing common digestive side effects like nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. The Vitamin C is included to help with absorption.”

He also noted that this product is third-party tested, which is something we look for in supplements because the FDA doesn’t assess them for safety or efficacy.

Best Hair Growth Vitamins for Men: Swolverine ZMT

Our Thoughts on Swolverine ZMT

This product looks slightly different than the others, in that it’s not really marketed as a hair-growth vitamin. Instead, it’s considered a testosterone booster and sleep aid. Researchers have examined the link between low testosterone and hair loss and while there isn’t very strong data available, some research shows that men with female-pattern hair thinning typically had lower testosterone levels than men with male-pattern hair loss. However, no direct link was established, with the study authors concluding that more research is needed on this topic. Curious to examine it for ourselves, we decided to include a testosterone supplement in our lineup so our tester could try it.

Pete, our tester, commented that while the Swolverine’s ZMT supplement has nice packaging and easy-to-read labels, “The tub itself is about 6 inches tall and 5 inches in diameter. In my opinion, it’s a little too big to be considered travel friendly.” He rated it a 5 out of 5 based on first impressions.

The supplement comes in a clear capsule, and the powder is off-white in color. Pete noted that the recommended serving size “is six capsules before bed, which is a lot.” He did find that the capsule didn’t have any added flavor. Pete gave this product 1 out of 5 stars for how easy it was to swallow the capsules, adding, “The six-capsule serving size is a lot and not something I would enjoy doing every night.” He assigned 3 out of 5 stars for the taste.

Pete did experience some sleep benefits, however. He said, “There are a few ingredients in the supplement that can help set your body up for sleep, including valerian root extract and melatonin. I did feel sleepy before bed and fell asleep easily.”

Overall, Pete didn’t note any benefits with regard to hair growth, but he did observe other possible benefits. As he explained, “Swolverine’s ZMT is a combination testosterone booster and nighttime sleep aid. It contains a bunch of different ingredients, including the amino acids taurine, theanine, and tryptophan, as well as ashwagandha, GABA, valerian root extract, tongkat ali, rhodiola rosea, DIM, and melatonin. This could work well as a recovery supplement for athletes, since it can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and may provide some basic hormonal support.” Not every man requires hormonal support, however, so if you’re considering adding a new supplement to your routine we recommend talking to your doctor first.
