WHITE PLAINS, NY, July 27, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- For many families, summer camp is a rite of passage. It's also one of the first times many parents entrust their child's safety to someone else.

As camps, sports programs, and summer enrichment activities welcome millions of children across the country this season, Lever & Ecker, PLLC attorney Kate Henderson recently appeared on PIX11 News to discuss how to determine whether a summer program is truly prepared to keep children safe.

"Most parents spend time researching activities, schedules, and whether a camp feels like a good fit. But it's equally important to understand how that organization handles emergencies, trains staff, and responds when something goes wrong," said Henderson.

A personal injury attorney and mother herself, Henderson encouraged families to move beyond brochures and websites and ask direct questions about safety procedures, supervision, emergency preparedness, and incident response.

She said one of the most revealing questions parents can ask is surprisingly simple, "Tell me about an injury that occurred here, and walk me through how it was handled."

The answer often provides a window into an organization's culture, transparency, and commitment to continuous improvement.

"Parents should not be afraid to ask difficult questions. A program's willingness to discuss safety procedures, past incidents, staff training, and emergency preparedness can tell families a great deal about how seriously they take their responsibility," said Henderson.

During the segment, Henderson highlighted several areas parents should understand before enrolling a child in any summer program, including:

  • Staff background checks and hiring practices
  • Supervision ratios
  • Swimming and water safety protocols
  • Transportation procedures
  • CPR and first-aid training
  • Medication and allergy management
  • Emergency drills and response plans
  • Family communication procedures during serious incidents

She also encouraged parents to ask how organizations evaluate incidents after they occur and what changes have been implemented as a result.

"Every organization hopes an emergency never happens; what matters is whether they've prepared for one and whether they're constantly learning from their experiences," said Henderson.

The conversation comes as many parents are becoming more thoughtful about summer safety and increasingly interested in understanding what safeguards exist behind the scenes. Safety advocates note that while licensed camps must meet specific regulatory requirements, not all summer programs operate under the same standards. Regardless of the type of program, organizations entrusted with children's care should be able to clearly explain their supervision practices, emergency procedures, medical protocols, and communication plans.

"Parents deserve transparency. Whether it's a traditional overnight camp, a sports clinic, a specialty program, or a day camp, families should feel comfortable asking questions and confident in the answers they receive," said Henderson.

Henderson's appearance is part of the firm's ongoing efforts to share practical safety information with families and the broader community.
