Meal delivery services come in handy during busy work weeks, especially when you don’t want to deal with figuring out what’s for dinner or take the time to cook.

But we wanted to see if we could find meal delivery options for those who follow a gluten-free diet. According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, even though about 6% to 7% percent of Americans experience gluten sensitivity, approximately 30% of the U.S. population tries to avoid eating gluten. We’re pleased to report that we did the research and found six excellent options that should serve folks with such dietary needs well. Here are our selections for the best gluten-free meal delivery services.

We loved the impressively delicious gluten-free meals.

People looking for high-quality, certified gluten-free meals.

PROS
  • Certified gluten-free
  • Impressive meals
  • A lot of ingredients are organic
CONS
  • Not every ingredient is organic
  • Modest portion sizes
  • Inaccurate prep times

Our Thoughts on Green Chef

Green Chef offers many certified organic ingredients. They allow customers to choose from a list of preferred lifestyle preferences—such as Mediterranean, carb smart, calorie smart, and plant based—and we focused on their gluten-free option for this testing. Green Chef has also received an official gluten-free certification from the Gluten Intolerance Group, so their gluten-free meal kits include premium ingredients that meet strict standards.

Kate, our tester, signed up for Green Chef and noted, “It was super easy to order online.” She also highlighted the variety of meal options and appreciated the various lifestyle options she could choose from. Kate thought the site was easy to navigate and gave the ordering experience a 5 out of 5.

Green Chef as best gluten-free meal delivery services

After the food was delivered, Kate made the meals and shared them with friends. As she explained, “We had the shrimp scampi, and it was honestly so good. I would eat this again in a heartbeat.” She appreciated that the recipes weren’t too hard to prepare, though she did say, “It definitely took longer than the 35 minutes it said it would.” Kate did like that the instructions were easy to follow, and she rated the overall preparation process and directions a 3 out of 5.

One drawback: Kate said portion sizes were on the smaller side. As she said, “I don’t think this was great for more than one person.” She went on to explain that she thought the meals were better for singles versus couples, unless a couple was deliberately trying to reduce their food intake. Kate rated the portion sizes 3 out of 5.

The food quality was impressive, though. Kate noted, “Everything tasted so good and fresh.” She also liked the presentation of the food and said the ingredients were high quality. Another positive? The packaging helped the ingredients stay cool nearly all day. Finally, Kate raved about the company’s focus on sustainability.

We liked the recyclable packaging and ability to shop for recipes as well as regular groceries.

Those who want the benefit of shoppable recipes plus grocery delivery.

PROS
  • Recyclable packaging
  • A lot of organic ingredients
  • Excellent freshness
CONS
  • Not all gluten-free items are certified as such
  • Hard to reach a human for customer support
  • Confusing credit system

Our Thoughts on Hungryroot

Hungryroot offers “shoppable recipes,” allowing you to choose a recipe and auto-add those ingredients to your cart, plus any groceries you also need. The company also says they have gluten-free options, explaining that customers can select specific dietary needs when they sign up, which ensures the company only sends groceries that meet those requirements. Customers can also update those dietary preferences any time.

It’s worth noting, though, that Hungryroot’s website says, “We define gluten-free products as not containing any gluten or gluten-based ingredients.” They continue to say that not all the gluten-free products are certified gluten-free, and there’s the possibility products “may be processed in the same facility as gluten and other allergens.”

Our tester, Meredith, tried Hungryroot and shared a lot of positive feedback. First, she complimented the website’s “good UX,” saying the Hungryroot website was easy to navigate. However, when she started going through the signup process she found it to be somewhat lengthy. This could ultimately be seen as a positive, though, as Hungryroot asks a lot of questions about dietary preferences during this process. Ultimately, the payoff for spending that time is getting nicely tailored recommendations.

Hungryroot as best gluten-free meal delivery services

We also want to note that Hungryroot uses a credit system, which isn’t the most intuitive to understand. Instead of having plans that offer a certain number of meals per week, like the other offerings in this lineup, Hungryroot assigns a weekly budget that translates into credits. But even if you go over or under your credit, you ultimately only pay for what you order. When we contacted Hungryroot’s customer service for clarification, we couldn’t reach an actual human despite trying via text and online chat—a definite downside.

Meredith did like being able to note dietary restrictions, and she also found it easy to pause her membership if necessary. She rated the general ordering experience a 4 out of 5.

The food itself was impressive. Meredith noted that her delivery “appeared to be fresh and in good condition,” and said that everything tasted great. She also said, “The box was very well packaged and sufficiently cold,” and all the packaging was recyclable. She awarded Hungryroot a 5 out of 5 for the great packaging and shipping, and also a 5 out of 5 for how fresh the food was.

We think this is a great option for families, given that it functions as a grocery delivery service—so you can add on as many meals and snacks as you like. Need more recs? See what our testers said when they looked for the best meal delivery services for families.

We love the really fresh food and excellent portion sizes.

People who prefer eating gluten-free and prioritize quality.

PROS
  • Easy prep
  • Very fresh meals
  • Great portion sizes
CONS
  • Packing not fully recyclable
  • Complete nutrition info not on box
  • Unclear if meals are certified gluten free

Our Thoughts on CookUnity

CookUnity offers a Non-Gluten Preferred meal delivery service, and the company’s website says each meal is “crafted fresh by A-list chefs, not mass-produced in a factory.” The company doesn’t note whether the meals are certified gluten-free, however.

Our tester, Andy, tried CookUnity’s gluten-free options. He tried the service for his family, noting that it was easy to swap meals “and it was easy to skip a week when we went on vacation this summer.” He gave the ordering process a 5 out of 5.

Andy explained that while the meals don’t arrive frozen, you do have to warm them up. He said, “We popped the meals in the toaster oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees and never had any issues.” He gave a 5 out of 5 for the easy prep and directions.

CookUnity as best gluten-free meal delivery services

Andy also added, “They tasted fresh and the vegetables almost always were crispy and yummy. The meals seemed like they had been made recently.” He commented on the nice portion sizes as well, giving them a 4 out of 5. Andy did say some proteins were better than others, explaining the steak was “never good” in his opinion but the poultry and vegetables were usually tasty.

One drawback? Andy said, “The package lists nutritional information, but you need to scan the QR code to see more detailed information. While I do like the transparency, I wish the complete nutrition information was on the box.”

Given how much our tester raved about the vegetable quality, we chose this service as the best option for people who want to eat both gluten-free and vegan meals. We also have some other options for excellent vegan meal delivery services.

We love the focus on specific dietary restrictions and access to dietitians.

People with certain food restrictions who don’t want to cook.

PROS
  • Recyclable packing
  • Good portion sizes
  • Food arrived cold
CONS
  • Frozen food lacked a sense of freshness
  • Portion sizes may seem small to some
  • Had to look up how to cancel

Our Thoughts on ModifyHealth

ModifyHealth’s website touts the slogan, “Food is the best medicine.” ModifyHealth offers plans that cater to specific dietary needs, including low-FODMAP, Mediterranean, diabetes-friendly, gluten-free, heart-friendly, carb-conscious, and GLP-1 support. It also offers virtual dietitian visits for additional support, which ModifyHealth says are often covered by insurance.

Our tester, Bridget, said the ordering experience was great, but she noted that she had to google how to cancel her subscription. Otherwise, she found the process clear and easy, and rated it a 4 out of 5.

ModifyHealth as best gluten-free meal delivery services

Bridget explained that the meals are frozen and need to be heated in the microwave, so they aren’t necessarily as fresh as other types of food delivery. She said, “These are heat and eat meals that are super easy to make and even offer instructions differentiating between the heating time if the meals are thawed versus if they’re still frozen.” She also noted, “The food isn’t amazing, but it also really depends on what you order and what you like. I thought it was decidedly okay.” She rated the prep and directions a 5 out of 5.

As for the portions, she was satisfied. Bridget said, “I felt like the portion sizes were accurate. I didn’t feel full, but I also wasn’t still hungry after eating.” She awarded portion sizes 5 out of 5.

Aside from the actual ordering and eating experience, Bridget noted that the meals were “clearly labeled with ingredients and nutritional information.” She also said, “I think the packaging on these was great. Everything was cold, still frozen” and noted the packaging was recyclable—even the insulation they use to keep food cold. Overall, we thought this service was ideal for singles when considering the moderate portion sizes and super-fast prep time.

Tempo as best gluten-free meal delivery service

The company offers dedicated gluten-free meals, which are fast to heat.

Those who want super-quick, gluten-free meals and aren’t concerned with cross contamination.

PROS
  • Short heating times
  • Some packaging is recyclable
  • Generally tasted good
CONS
  • Not suitable for people with Celiac disease
  • Portion sizes felt slightly small
  • Not all of the packaging is recyclable

Our Thoughts on Tempo

Tempo says it offers protein-packed meals that can be cooked in about two minutes. The company focuses on convenience, saying their meals are designed by chefs and can be cooked quickly, all with the goal of helping people reach their nutrition goals.

The company offers what they call “gluten-smart meals,” defined as meals made with ingredients that do not contain naturally occurring gluten or intentionally added gluten. However, as Tempo says on its website, “Please note that due to potential cross-contact, these meals are not suitable for those with Celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance.”

Christy, our tester and a staff writer on the Fortune team, tried this service and reported an overall positive experience.

At the start of the process Christy said she found the website very easy to navigate and use. Though, she did note, “If you’re going to sign up for Tempo, the company has you pay before you select your meals. If you do some digging on their website, however, you can find their menu list by week. I’m just not sure that everyone would be able to find this, as it’s fairly buried.”

Tempo as best meal delivery services.

When her order arrived, Christy noted that the instructions were printed on the cardboard wrapped around each meal. She wrote, “They’re a little hard to read because the ink/printing isn’t perfect, but I can still make out what to do.” Christy explained there were both microwave and conventional oven directions, and an added note about food safety which she appreciated. She rated the prep and directions a 5 out of 5.

Her food only required a couple of minutes to heat, and she said, “The portion size was overall a good fit. After eating I felt full, but not too full, but I did feel snacky about two hours later.” Christy rated portion sizes a 4 out of 5.

Christy said once she dug in, “The salmon tasted good, but the texture was more like a cooked-from-frozen salmon, which wasn’t the best mouthfeel. I honestly loved the broccoli in this dish…it was fresh, tasty, and bright and nicely seasoned with garlic and parsley.”

She also commended the company’s packaging, noting that her meals arrived cold and in recyclable packaging (except for the ice packs). We’ve previously looked for the best prepared meal delivery services, but this is our top gluten-free pick.

We appreciated the convenience and quality of these heat-and-eat meals.

This service would be suitable for people who prioritize their budget and prefer to avoid eating seed oils.

PROS
  • High-quality food
  • Fast prep time
  • Accommodates various dietary restrictions
CONS
  • Smaller portion sizes
  • Packaging[/hotlink] not fully recyclable
  • Difficult to cancel or change orders

Our Thoughts on Forkful

Forkful’s main marketing claim is that its meals don’t include any seed oils like canola, soybean, or sunflower oil, but use olive oil instead.

These meals can be heated in two minutes, and our tester, Kate, gave them a try. From the start she ran into an issue. She had to create an account and add her credit card information before she could even look at the meal selection. Kate explained, “That turned me off a bit in case I did not like the options and then they already had my information.” She noted that Forkful offered various meal options, tailored to various dietary preferences. Kate rated the ordering experience a 3 out of 5.

But after receiving her order, Kate noted how easy it was to prep the meals. She said, “All you do is put it in the microwave and heat it up! It’s fully prepared.” Our tester rated the prep and directions a 5 out of 5. After cooking she noted that the meals “just look okay,” and “very much seems like a microwaved meal.” However, Kate added, “It tastes better than it looks, and it really does have a fresh taste to it! I was impressed.”

Forkful as best gluten-free meal delivery services

Portion-wise, Kate said, “These are a good lunch portion. You probably would want to add a protein shake or additional meal replacements to get you full.” She rated the meals a 4 out of 5 for portion sizes.

She also appreciated the packaging and the ice packs to keep the meals cold. Kate highlighted the recyclable packaging and the included instructions on how to recycle it. The ice packs, however, are not recyclable.

Kate did feel it was tricky to cancel or change orders, and she said the FAQs didn’t seem as comprehensive as other companies. Still, we found this to be the best value option for gluten-free meals, especially if you order a plan with a large number of meals.

On that note, here are some additional options for cheap meal delivery services some shoppers may wish to consider as alternatives.

Other Meal Delivery Services We Tested and Considered

We included our top picks in this list, but we tested many more gluten-free meal delivery services. Here are some of them, and why they ultimately didn’t make the final cut for this article.

  • One tester who tried Purple Carrot’s gluten-free options found that while some meals were “pretty good,” others “just didn’t hit the mark.” The tester noted a lack of seasoning or undesirable textures, saying overall it was fine but not great. She also found it hard to figure out how to change meals.
  • Another tester ordered from CleanEatz, but said food wasn’t something she’d want to eat repeatedly. The takeaway: The food was “decent,” but our tester overall “wasn’t super impressed.” Additionally, she found it difficult to find nutrition information for each meal and noted that meal photos were small and unclear.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Gluten-Free Meal Delivery Services

We asked testers to try a wide variety of meal delivery services, specifically focusing on services that offer gluten-free options. Testers take a lot of notes during the testing process, assign ratings for different variable, and give an overall big-picture view of their experience with that meal delivery service—not just the quality of the food itself, but the ordering and delivery process, pricing, and so on. Here are some other things we asked them to pay close attention to.

Taste

Flavor was obviously a top criterion. If it doesn’t taste good, what’s the point? Our testers focused on how each gluten-free meal tasted, and noted any issues with texture as well.

Meal Variety

While many of these meal delivery services offer a variety of options, we looked specifically at their gluten-free options. That included noting whether each service offered just a few gluten-free meals, or enough variety to keep customers from getting bored.

Ordering Process

In our opinion, it doesn’t matter how good the food tastes if ordering it is overly complicated. So our testers took notes as they signed up for each service and went through the ordering process, explaining whether it was seamless or had any moments of friction.

Portion Size

Meal sizes can vary, so we looked at each meal delivery service’s portion size. No one wants to pay for delicious meals only to still feel hungry after eating them.

Green Chef as best gluten-free meal delivery services

Ingredient Quality

Some meal delivery services offer organic ingredients, but aside from the marketing claims we examined the food itself. Did it look fresh and appetizing, or was it wilted and discolored?

Plans and Customization

Because everyone’s needs are different, we asked testers to note the different plans and how easy it was to customize them. While this isn’t always crucial if a meal delivery service already has a great variety of plans, it’s still nice to know you can customize your deliveries if desired.

Value

Signing up for a gluten-free meal delivery service, or any food delivery service for that matter, can feel like a luxury. While the cost-per-serving is often very reasonable, we still want to make sure you get the most value for your dollar. Here’s what we looked at when considering overall value.

Pro Tip:

Make sure to think about whether you want to do some cooking, or whether you want to simply heat and eat. Most of these options offer freshly prepared meals that you can heat in a couple of minutes, but there’s still a great meal kit option for those who want to be more hands-on with dinner prep.

How to Find the Best Gluten-Free Meal Delivery Service for You

As always, when choosing a meal delivery service make sure to consider your own personal priorities. Determining what matters most to you will help you choose the best gluten-free meal delivery service for your lifestyle. Here are some things to consider.

Gluten-Free Meal Options

You’ll of course want to ensure that any meal delivery service you choose offers gluten-free meal options—and not just a few, but a wide assortment to help keep things feeling new and interesting.

Ingredient Quality

We include options that offer satisfactory ingredient quality, but if you have any additional preferences make sure to keep that in mind while shopping for a gluten-free meal delivery service. If you prioritize organic ingredients, for example, make sure to look for a gluten-free meal delivery service that offers that.

Cost

Pay attention not only to membership or subscription costs, but delivery charges as well. We prioritized cost-effective options for individuals and families alike but be sure to look at plan prices to find an option that works well for your budget.

Hungryroot as best gluten-free meal delivery services

Portion Size

Are you usually famished by dinner time, looking for a large meal, or do you prefer to eat a light meal at the end of the day? Take note of tester feedback on portion sizes to make sure you pick an option that fits your usual appetite.

Prep Process

Meal delivery services offer a variety of options: Some require cooking; others only require heating. So, think about whether you’re looking for a more hands-on cooking experience, or whether you’d like someone else to do the cooking for you—and choose a gluten-free meal delivery service accordingly.

Benefits of Gluten-Free Meal Delivery Services

Meal delivery services offer many benefits, one of them being that you can often choose a plan that caters to your dietary preferences. Besides that, here are some other benefits.

  • Convenience: Meal delivery services save time by having your meals, or ingredients for your meals, delivered to your home. They also make meal planning much easier because you choose your meals well in advance.
  • Accessibility: For people who have mobility challenges or lack reliable transportation, gluten-free meal delivery services make it much easier to get food. And for people with gluten intolerances that may have a hard time finding food at the store, meal delivery services can offer a wider variety of options.
  • Variety: Many people who follow a certain diet can get stuck in a rut of cooking the same things over and over. With a gluten-free meal delivery service, you’re introduced to entirely new recipes, cooking techniques, and meals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gluten-free meal delivery service?

The best option for you is the one that suits your unique needs. Take into account your priorities and make to choose the gluten-free meal delivery service that is most aligned with them.

Is Hungryroot good for people with Celiac?

The Hungryroot website explains that they define gluten-free products as “not containing any gluten or gluten-based ingredients.” However, the company notes that not all of its gluten-free products are certified gluten-free, and they may be processed in the same facility as gluten and other allergens. Hungryroot further explains that you can click on a gluten-free item’s photo (in your “Food Profile”) to see whether it was processed in a facility that also contains gluten. For these reasons, people with Celiac may need to exercise caution with Hungryroot.

Does HelloFresh have a gluten-free option?

HelloFresh does offer some gluten-free recipes, describing them as “meals that are naturally free from gluten without any swaps or replacements.” However, the company website also notes that because of its packing processes, the company can’t guarantee its gluten-free meals are 100% free from gluten—and therefore are not suitable for people with Celiac disease.
