A Kroger bathroom sign that explains why the retail food chain has a unisex bathroom has been widely praised after a customer posted it on Facebook over the weekend.
The grocery retailer said its bathroom in its store in Athens, Ga. is designed to be suitable for both sexes because “sometimes gender specific toilets put others into uncomfortable situations.” The notice, posted on the bathroom door under a large “Unisex” label, goes on to list different groups who may benefit from a unisex bathroom.

“Since we have a lot of our friends coming to see us, we want to provide a place for our friends who are dads with daughters, moms with sons, parents with disabled children, those in the LGBTQ community, adults with aging parents who may be mentally or physically disabled,” it says. “Thank you for helping us to provide a safe environment for everyone!”
The Facebook post has been shared more than 31,000 times and has received at least 19,000 likes since Saturday. Some commenters were critical of the message, while many encouraged it. Kroger did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
