Sorry, Internet: Chris Christie has gone on record to say that he was not wordlessly screaming during Donald Trump’s Super Tuesday press conference.
In a press conference of his own on Thursday afternoon, Christie addressed questions from reporters regarding his support for Trump and his future in New Jersey and perhaps beyond.
The New Jersey governor also addressed a joke that swept across social media after Christie appeared to stare glumly as Trump gave his victorious Super Tuesday press conference. In a widely shared Washington Post article, humorist Alexandra Petri wrote that Christie spent the presser “screaming wordlessly.” “His were the eyes of a man who has gazed into the abyss, and the abyss gazed back, and then he endorsed the abyss.”

On Thursday, Christie clarified: that’s just his listening face. “No, I wasn’t sitting up there thinking, ‘Oh, my God, what have I done?'” Christie said. “I don’t know what I was supposed to be doing. All these armchair psychiatrists should give it a break.”
Christie—who is being called to resign from his gubernatorial post by several New Jersey newspaper editorial boards—also said he plans to finish out his term and then retire to the private sector. Probably.
“I’m going to be considering, I suspect, a lot of different offers, both private sector and public sector, and I’ll pick the one I think is best for me and my family,” he told reporters.
