People looking for an affordable stocking stuffer for the living room might consider the Roku SE. The streaming device unveiled Wednesday will retail for $49.99 but will be cut to just $25 on Black Friday.
The new device is significantly cheaper than top-of-the-line streamers like the Roku 4, Amazon Fire TV and the new Apple TV. Unlike the Roku 4, the Roku SE won’t be able to stream in 4K and it lacks an ethernet port. The company told TechCrunch that the internals of the device are “similar” to the Roku 1, which also retails for $50, so expect the device to chug along a little slower than pricier models. However, the SE does offer 1080p streaming and supports the latest version of the Roku operating system.
At $25, Roku SE should be the cheapest streaming device available this holiday season. Google’s Chromecast retails for $35, and the Amazon Fire TV Stick costs $40.
